Differences in Student Learning Outcomes Between Problem-Based Learning and Direct Instruction Models in Ecosystem Material

Abstrak

This study aims to determine the differences in student learning outcomes taught between the use of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and the Direct Instruction (DI) model on ecosisem material in class VII at SMP Negeri 29 Medan. This research is included in the type of Quasi experimental research using a two group pretest postes design. The study population included all seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Medan consisting of 9 classes. The samples used were two classes, namely class VII-6 (experimental class) which applied the PBL model, and class VII-3 as the control class which used the DI model. The sampling technique was done by random sampling. Data collection was done through tests. Data analysis was done by hypothesis testing using t-test. The average pretest and posttest scores of students' cognitive abilities in the experimental class were 34.06 and 80.16 and in the control class 31.56 and 71.88. The test was conducted using the SPSS version 30 program with the Independent Sample T-test at the significance level α = 0.05. Based on the results of hypothesis testing, the Sig value < α (0.01 < 0.05) was obtained, which means Ha is accepted. This shows that there is a significant difference in student learning outcomes in the experimental class taught with the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model compared to the control class with the Direct Instruction (DI) model on ecosystem material VII SMP Negeri 29 Medan.
